NEWQUAY (the Cornish name is Tewynn Porth Lestri meaning "sand dune by ship's cove") is a town on the north coast and a world-renowned surfer's paradise and holiday destination. On the headland is the Huer's Hut, restored in 1835, where the huer would watch for shoals of fish and direct the fishermen towards them, Probably the origin of hue and cry. In the 2001 census the population of Newquay was just under 20,000 but there are nearer 200,000 people in Newquay in the summer months. |
