GWITHIAN TOWANS

Gwithian Towans

A beach in west Cornwall situated near Hayle. It si situated at the end of the long, sandy beach at Hayle, it offers small coves and stretches of open sand with safe bathing. Surfing conditions are generally favourable. It is sheltered on one side from the north-east winds.

Access
Take the Gwithian road from Hayle and turn left onto the towans. A path leads down to the beach.

Swimming & Surfing
Lifeguard cover on this beach from 29th April to 25th September 2011. Lifeguards also on the beach over Easter from 9th - 25th April 2011. Weekends are also covered, plus the half-term week of the 22nd to the 30th October 2011.
This is a reasonably exposed beach break that usually has waves and can work at any time of the year. Works best in offshore winds from the east southeast. Tends to receive a mix of groundswells and windswells and the best swell direction is from the west northwest. Waves at the beach break both left and right. Often Crowded. Watch out for rips / crowds. More sheltered section of beachbreaks south of Godrevy. Great for beginners looking for a bit of space. It provides consistent, quality waves suitable fo all levels. It conveniently gets gradually bigger the further towards Godrevey you go - so you can find a wave to suit your ability (and kehonas!). Godrevy and Gwithian are for all intents and purposes opposite ends of the same beach so much of what is said there applies equally here On a good day expect long walling lefts and rights with the possiblility of a few barrels thrown in at low tide. Optimum conditions are medium sized north coast swell and southerly round to easterly winds (south east is directly offshore)

Facilities
Surf school and camping nearby plus a small cafe. There is a cafe and beach shop by the main car park plus another couple of places set back in the dunes. Lifeguard cover during summer months. There are toilets nearby.
